THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

January 24 , 2008

Everything that is born must die. But you can escape death by not being born again. When you realise that you are the limitless Atma, you are no longer subjected to the limitation of birth. That is the secret. How is this knowledge to be acquired? It is the result of a long process of sharpening and purifying the emotions and the impulses. You may do the most rigorous Japa (repetition of God's name) or submit yourself to the ordeal of austerities, but if you are not virtuous, all of it is sheer waste.

Be always cheerful and sprightly. There will always be ups and downs on the road of life. Pleasant or unpleasant, take all vicissitudes alike, with fortitude. In the sky of your heart, dark thick clouds of desire and doubt hide out the brilliance of the Sun of Buddhi (intellect). They are only clouds; they will pass away. Develop a strong character; reason will blow the wind which will drive off the clouds. Meditate on God and pray that they pass away; the Lord will come to your help.

The mind is the source of all desire; so, try to acquire, not diamond, but, 'die-mind.' Let all desires for sense-objects die, or, concentrate all desires on God. Surrender all desires to Him. Surrender all instincts, impulses, attachments to Him. In the Gita, Lord Krishna has assured: “When you surrender everything to Me, your welfare and happiness become My responsibility."

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

January 22 , 2008

Reflections of the sun shining in the sky can be seen in the oceans, rivers, lakes and wells. Though the reflections are varied, there is only one sun. The Divine is present in man like the unseen thread which holds a garland of gems together. The entire cosmos is permeated by the Divine and is the visible manifestation of the Divine. Nothing in the world, no object, no human being, no creature can be found wherein God is not present. There is only one God and he is 'Sath-Chith-Ananda' (Being-Awareness-Bliss).

Who are our friends and who are our enemies? Our own good thoughts are our friends. Our evil thoughts accompany us like shadows. When our thoughts are purified, our lives will be transformed into ideal ones. The mind is a bundle of thoughts. Actions ensue from thoughts. From actions flow the fruits thereof. Hence thoughts are the seeds which ultimately yield fruits in the form of good fortune and misfortune. Man is thus the architect of his own life. As thoughts determine actions, it is essential to cultivate good thoughts.
- Divine Discourse, February 13, 1991.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

January 21 , 2008

To achieve anything in this world, discipline is indispensable; we must also have self-confidence, and then self-sacrifice. If you do not possess these three, your life will be meaningless. When a river is flowing erratically, we construct a dam, change its course and divert is usefully on its way to the ocean. So also, when our ideas are recklessly and aimlessly going their own way, they should be channelled by the construction of the dam of discipline. They should be made to take the form of sacrifice and go towards the ocean of faith in one’s Self. We should regard it as absolutely essential to attain these three qualities – sacrifice, self-confidence and discipline.

You are in this body in order to realise the God you really are. This body is the cocoon you have spun around yourselves by means of your impulses and desires. Use it while it lasts, to grow wings so that you can escape from it. You came into this world crying, announcing your grief for having to take on the burden of earthly existence. Having come with grief, decide not to go back with it from here. Get rid of it in this very life.

Just as the hands, ears, eyes and legs are all angas (limbs or organs) of individual human body, the bodies of all human beings are the limbs of society. Again, society itself is a limb of mankind. And humanity is a limb of Prakrithi (Nature) and Nature is a limb of Divinity. One should understand this Anga-Angee-Bhaava (intimate limb) relationship between Divinity and human beings, in the proper perspective.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

January 19 , 2008

Man is carried away by identification with the body and therefore he perceives diversity in creation. In fact, unity is what underlies the apparent diversity. Whatever differences you see are only creations of your mind. The mind of man alone is responsible for both his bondage and liberation. Recognise the truth that the same divine essence is present in all and you will be free from all differences and conflicts.

Though man is endowed with Buddhi (intelligence), he is not able to master the senses. One should understand the great significance of human life, which is superior to that of all other species. Because of the body consciousness, man is forgetting his inherent divinity. You study a great deal about Prakrithi (Nature) and worldly things, and lead an artificial life, without realizing that the heart is the seat of Divinity. If you allow bad feelings to enter the heart, it will be polluted and the Divine will have no place therein.

PRASANTHI UPDATES

January 23 , 2008

For the last few days there have been no special programmes in Sai Kulwant Hall. On most days, Bhagawan was coming for darshan as the Bhajans went on. On a few occasions, He went on a second round of darshan in His chair in front of the students' blocks. This evening, Bhagawan accepted Arati at 5.30 from the Bhajan Hall and went into the interview room. A few minutes later, He emerged and sat outside on the stage, Blessing the Computer Science and Accounts project reports brought up to Him by the XII class students. He also Blessed their teacher with a chain. Interacting with the students for a few minutes, He asked them to sing. The students enthusiastically sang Bhajans for another ten minutes before Swami accepted Arati once again. He continued to sit onstage talking to the boys nearby till He left for His residence at 6.30 pm.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

January 18 , 2008

Man is deriving innumerable benefits from Nature and enjoying the amenities provided by it in various ways. But what is the gratitude he is offering to Nature and God? Man is forgetting the Divine who is the Sole Provider of everything. This is the reason for his falling prey to various difficulties and calamities. While he is receiving countless benefits from Providence, he is offering nothing in return to Nature or God. This shows how unnatural and heartless man's behaviour is. When we are enjoined to return good for evil, how unbecoming is it to fail even to return good for good? Man should learn the great lesson Nature is trying to teach him - the lesson of doing service with no expectation of return.

The wounds that his tongue inflicts can scarce be healed; they fester in the heart for long. They are capable of more damage than even an atom bomb.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

January 17 , 2008

What is spirituality? It is the resolute pursuit of cosmic consciousness. Spirituality aims at enabling a person to manifest in all its fullness the divine cosmic consciousness (Chaitanya) that is present both within and outside oneself. It means getting rid of one’s animal nature and developing the divine tendencies within one. It means breaking down the barriers between God and Nature and establishing their essential oneness. Today, people think that spirituality has no relation to mundane life, and vice versa. This is a big mistake. True divinity is a combination of spirituality and social obligations. National unity and social harmony are founded upon spirituality. It is the Divine that links spirituality and social existence.

Therefore, those aspiring to be liberated must cut asunder these evil tendencies with the sharp sword of jnaana (spiritual wisdom). THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

January 16 , 2008

Man's conduct is based on his thoughts. Thoughts are based on desires. Desires depend on the company that one keeps. The company of noble people gives rise to noble thoughts. The mind by nature is pure, but it gets polluted by association with evil qualities. Purification of the mind is therefore the main spiritual practice that one has to undertake. Repent wholeheartedly for the mistakes that have been committed. This penance will purify your mind and make it sacred.

Bhagawan then delivered His Divine Discourse at 8.50 am. At the end of His Discourse, Swami asked the Wardens and the Principals of the respective campuses to come onstage and recieve the campus trophies from His hands. Sankranti is an auspicious festival of the Bharatiyas. From this day commences the Uttarayana Punyakala (northward journey of the sun) which is considered auspicious for man to embark on his journey towards the goal of a purposeful, sacred and blissful life. In the north, we have Himachala (Himalayan mountains). Himachala symbolises a heart that is pure and cool as Hima (ice) and steady as Achala (mountain). The message of Sankranti is that people should direct their vision towards Himachala in this symbolic sense. It does not mean looking at the north with the physical eyes. It calls for enquiring into the truth of the spirit with Jnana Drishti (inward eye of wisdom).

The Bhajans lasted nearly two hours as He accepted Arati past 10.50. While returning to His residence, Swami stopped near the Primary School students in His car for nearly 15 minutes. The Anantapur campus students presented a musical programme in the evening. The songs got underway as Swami came onstage after His darshan round at 5.10 pm. The audience was treated to an ensemble of semi-classical and East-West fusion songs for the next forty minutes, after which they began singing Bhajans. Bhagawan called the Principal of the Campus and Blessed her with a chain. After twenty minutes of Bhajans by the Anantapur students, Bhagawan asked the regular Bhajan singers of Prasanthi Nilayam and Brindavan to go into the Bhajan Hall and start Bhajans there with aalaaps. This morning, Bhagawan had an announcement made that the Brindavan students' drama would be presented in the evening. Swami came to Sai Kulwant Hall at 4.45 pm in the Porte car and after a darshan round, alighted at the Verandah, calling up the respective Wardens to begin distribution of watches to all the students of Prasanthi Nilayam and Brindavan. He sat on the Verandah while the distribution went on, and then started giving some watches Himself to some of the doctors and others seated nearby. Moving down the verandah, Swami started giving watches to teachers and other staff members, and kept giving till all of them had come and accepted the watches from His hands. The drama on Kabirdas then got underway at 5.15 pm. The story of Kabirdas was presented in an elegant way by the Brindavan students, interspersed with many songs and dohas which reflected Bhagawan's teachings. The sets and costumes were outstanding. Bhagawan Blessed the student who played the role of Kabir with a ring and a chain. Bhagawan returned to His residence at 6.45 pm after Arati.

The human body is the most wondrous machine in the world. It has a bewildering multiplicity of organs, nerves and cells which cooperate to maintain it under varied conditions. If any one of these rebel or refuse to cooperate with another, the body is bound to suffer. When the fruit is ripe, it will fall off the branch of its own accord. Last evening, Bhagawan had an announcement made in the stadium that the drama by the Prasanthi Nilayam campus students would be this evening at 5 pm. The students were earlier given a date of 15th January, so this announcement was a surprise. The set-making and costumes students pulled yet another all-nighter and continued preparations till the drama got underway in the evening. Bhagawan arrived at 5 pm in His chair and directly went and sat near the bronze lion next to the Lotus gate of Sai Kulwant Hall. The drama stage faced North as per Swami's instructions. The cast had not yet arrived from the Hostel with their makeup! The teachers and authorities prayed to Bhagawan to excuse the delay, and finally the drama got underway at 5.20 pm. The drama "Ramayana Ratnahara Veeranjaneya" depicted various scenes in the Ramayana where Hanuman shines as an example for all mankind. The hour long presentation included stanzas of poems in Telugu, songs and dances, and soul-stirring dialogues. Bhagawan was very pleased with the presentation and Blessed the script-writer, a II year MSc. student, with a chain. He then Blessed all the participants with group photographs scene by scene, including the hard-working set and costume group, before accepting Arati at 6.50 pm and returning to His residence.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

In this Kali Age, people have forgotten human values and exhibit animal qualities such as lust, anger, greed and hatred. One may study all the scriptures, perform all types of sacrifices, go on extensive pilgrimages, but it is not easy to control the senses and the mind, direct one's vision inward and maintain equanimity. For, like the fish which can live only in water, man can live only in God - in peace and happiness. In other media, he has only fear, frantic struggle, and failure... Today was the colourful Sports Meet function for which Swami's students were practising for the last few weeks. You can read an illustrated account of last year's function in last year's Prasanthi Diary. This year, Bhagawan arrived at the Vidyagiri stadium in His white Saab convertible resplendent in a yellow robe at 7.45 am. Motorcycle escorts and marching bands of the students welcomed their Chancellor to the dais and the marchpast began at 8 o'clock. When all the students had marched into the ground, the flag-hoisting, oath and torch-lighting ceremonies were a prelude to the display events by the different campuses. The Anantapur Womens' Campus of the University and the Brindavan undergraduates presented in the morning, the Primary School and the Prasanthi Nilayam Campus performed in the evening. The Anantapur display began at 8.45 with graceful group dancing followed by a Far-Eastern group item with parasols and hand-fans. A sports medley followed, presenting hockey, tennis and volleyball movements in formation. Motorbike stunts was the next item, including criss-crosses, various poses on bikes, a breath-taking ramp-jump over 20 girls and a human pyramid of 38 girls on 9 bikes. The Anantapur students concluded their half-hour presentation forming the words "We Love U" in a group formation as their concluding song was played. The Brindavan students then began with an equestrian show-jumping demonstration. A marching band presentation brought up a display of rolling in steel hoops and an aerobics exhibition. Timber-drill was the next item, with planks of wood being used in imaginative ways to aid acrobatic feats. The Celestial Rhythms then spelt out "We Love You" in a grid of students suspended by a crane nearly 80 feet above the ground. As the Brindavan presentation concluded, Bhagawan accepted Arati onstage and returned to the Mandir at 10 o'clock while an announcement was made about the afternoon presentations. Swami graciously granted group photographs for the Band groups of Anantapur and Prasanthi Nilayam and also the motorcycle escorts before He went into Yajur Mandir. Bhagawan arrived at 3.25 pm in the afternoon in a maroon robe riding in His Mercedes sports convertible. As He reached the stage, tiny tots from the Primary School brought up bouquets to Him and began the afternoon's presentation. The hour-long Primary School presentation was a joyful riot of colour as usual, beginning with a "Ganesa" group dance by small boys. A classical mass-dance, hand-fans and flowers formations, gymnastics, mass flower-dance, dance by small girls with white wings and Mexican poncho dance followed in quick succession. Children dressed as deer, tigers, bunnies and monkeys performed various gymnastic feats on mats, ropes and poles. Their elder brothers and sisters may do motobike stunts, but the bicycle stunts by the Primary School boys were just as eye-catching. Unicycle stunts, even a basketball match played on unicycles, and then a rainbow dance led to their final dance balancing items on their heads, paying tribute to Bhagawan, the Light of Lights. The students of the Sri Sathya Sai Higher Secondary School and the Prasanthi Nilayam campus of Sri Sathya Sai University began their hour-long performance at 4.30 pm with a striking mass item with classical dancers in the foreground and patterns made from colourful foldable discs forming a context for Krishna's beautiful Leelas - "Adharam Madhuram...". Gymnasts on moving trucks then presented balancing feats with giant flags fifty feet high. Gymnastic feats including jumps over vehicles and acrobatics on moving trucks led to a breathtaking display on ropes including a spectacular spin on a rope suspended more than 20 feet above the ground. The rope structure was also used as a trapeze stage, as roller-bladers scintillated on the ground below, ending their dramatic show with a series of jumps over a van. A precision gun drill was followed by a karate display which featured breaking tiles and pots and also mass nan-chak and stick displays. As the Prasanthi Nilayam campus came together for their final song, Bhagawan expressed how pleased He was at His students' performance and profusely Blessed them before leaving for His residence.

But because man's vision is externalized, he is unable to have the inner vision of the Divine. People crave for peace. Though the source of peace and bliss is within themselves, they seek this in the external, like one pursuing a mirage. Owing to restless activity, endless worry and limitless desires, man has lost peace of mind and has become prey to discontent and misery. At the outset, peace has to be cultivated within ourselves. And then that peace has to be extended to the family. From the home it should be spread to our locality. Thus, peace should begin with the individual and spread to the whole society.

Yajna (sacrifice) means "giving up" or "renunciation". What exactly has to be given up? Riches? That is easy enough. One's home? That too is not hard. Does it mean retiring into a forest, breaking away from kith and kin? Many have done so and become proud of it. The renunciation (thyaga) that thesacrifice (yajna) demands is the casting off of pomp, pride, envy, greed, in short, the ego itself. Every rite laid down in the Veda (ancient Indian scriptures) has this aim only - to promote selflessness and Universal Love. Concentration on sensual gratification, anger, fury, hatred - these are bestial characteristics. Man must be ashamed to have even a trace of such traits. The characteristics of human nature are, and ought to be - love, forbearance, detachment, renunciation and truth.

Perhaps, you have to make another entrance the next morning. Do not worry about that. Every one is a saint, for he/she is an embodiment of bliss, peace and immortality. But, by allowing the crust of ego to grow thick and fast, the real nature is tarnished. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

January 06 , 2008

In this infinite world there are manifold beings. It is only Dharma (right-conduct) and Jnana (wisdom) that distinguish man from other beings. You can win the Grace of the Lord only by Dharma. Dharma induces the spirit of self-surrender. Without the mastery over the senses, feelings and emotions that is a result of the practice of Dharma, you cannot have steady faith and detachment.

Life today is filled with sorrow; it is beset with fear and despair. The only time you can forget these thoughts and strengthen yourself to meet the hard times is when you contact the Source of all strength, God. You cannot get that peace and joy while you bend under the burden of daily life. You are carrying a huge load of worry all day; keep that aside for an hour every evening and spend that time with God who can make your shoulders strong and your burden light.
- Divine Discourse, December 4, 1976.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

January 05 , 2008
All religions teach one basic discipline, the removal of egoism and giving up of petty desires. Every religion teaches man to fill his being with the glory of God and evict the pettiness of conceit. It trains him in methods of detachment and discrimination, so that he may aim high and attain liberation. Believe that all hearts are motivated by the One and only God; all Faiths glorify the One and only God; all names in all languages and all Forms that man can conceive of, denote the One and the only God who is best worshipped through pure Love. Cultivate that Ekabhava (the attitude of oneness) towards men of all creeds in all lands.

Help others so that you may repay the service that you received. Do not look on, when you find some one in pain or grief. As far as possible, relieve the pain, console the grief-stricken. A man who works for wages, calculates the reward at so much per hour, receives his wages and quits. But, when one works as part of his worship, glad that he is given the chance to serve as long and as gladly as he can, he derives maximum Aananda (joy).

, 1968.

SAI INSPIRES

January 09 , 2008

Everyone must cultivate a broad mind, a large-hearted outlook. Broad mindedness is expansion, narrow-mindedness is contraction. Devotees should also cultivate broad mindedness. It is to broaden the heart that name of the Lord should be chanted. Instead of singing by oneself, when devotees sing in groups, a sense of unity develops. By all people singing in unison and all hands clapping together, all hearts become one. This unity is proclaimed in the Vedas (ancient Indian scriptures) by describing the different organs of the Lord as the Source of the Power in the different sense organs of a human being.
- Divine Discourse, April 1984.

Little acts of service can confer on you great spiritual benefit. Firstly, it will destroy your egoism. Pride will transform friends into enemies, will keep even kinsmen afar, and will defeat all good schemes. Service will develop in you the quality of humility. And humility will enable you to work in happy unison with others.
- Divine Discourse,
November 21, 1981.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

January 04 , 2008

Samskriti, the Sanskrit word for culture and civilization is derived from the word 'Samskara', which means the dual process of removing the dust and dirt of vice and planting the virtues of Sathya (Truth), Dharma (Righteousness), Shanti (Peace) and Prema (Love) in the heart. The foundation of Dharma laid down by sages teach people that one should not enthuse over victory or despair over defeat; both are to be welcomed as tests of one's faith.

Just think for a moment whether the rich, the strong, the highly educated or the clever are happy. No one is happy, you will find. If you must be happy, one of two things must happen. All your desires must be fulfilled, or you should not have any desire. Of these, the reduction of desire is the easier path.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

January 03 , 2008

The four subtle elements of consciousness - Manas (the mind), Buddhi (the intellect), Chittha (will) and Ahamkara (the ego) - are all Maya (delusion). What is Maya? Maa (not) ya (exist). That which does not exist but appears to exist is Maya. Maya makes the unreal appear as real and the real as unreal. The other name for Maya is Ajnana (ignorance). Ajnana is that which hides the reality from you and makes you regard the non-existing as existing. It makes the false appear as true. As you move towards the light, your shadow falls behind you; when you move away from the light, you have to follow your own shadow. Go every moment one step nearer to the Lord and then Maya, the shadow, will fall behind you and will not delude you at all.

Mountain peaks are charming from a distance; when approached, they confront us with terror-striking jungles. So too, the world (Samsara) appears charming, when men have not delved into its meaning and value. When discrimination is employed to explore its value, the truth is revealed that the family jungle or the world jungle cannot give genuine happiness. Only the Atma can give that blessing. Can the lake, which strikes us as invitingly charming so long as the mirage is on, quench one’s thirst?... Therefore, one should learn Self Knowledge, the process by which one becomes aware of one’s Self Reality. By learning it and living it, one can quench his own thirst and help to quench the thirst of all mankind.

The Sai Students, alumni of the colleges at Prasanthi Nilayam and Brindavan, ushered in the New Year at Prasanthi Nilayam as they have been doing for the last few years. The Sai Kulwant Hall was full of devotees, and was tastefully decorated with flowers. Bhagawan came to Sai Kulwant Hall in His chair at 8.45 am in a procession led by the Sai Students chanting Vedam, with traditional fans and an umbrella to worship the Lord. After Swami came onstage, the Vedam continued for a few minutes, the University Brass Band played a few pieces, then Prof. G. Venkataraman was asked to speak. He welcomed the alumni and described them as the hope for a troubled world. Sri A. V. Gokak, the current Vice-Chancellor was the next to speak. His talk also centred around the transformational work done by the Sai Students. As the speeches concluded at 10.10, Bhagawan asked the students to commence their music programme. After a few songs, the alumni presented a song taught to them by Swami for Ugadi in 1985. It was already nearing eleven o'clock, so Bhagawan accepted Arati and returned to His residence. In the afternoon, Bhagawan arrived in His car at 4.45 pm. Coming onstage after a round of the Hall, He first called up the Bhangra dance group of the Sai Students and had their ten minute performance. The Orchestra prepared by the alumni was the next item, performing from the centre of the Hall with loudspeakers facing Bhagawan who was seated onstage. Short speeches followed, recollecting the golden years they had spent with their Lord. Swami then asked for the microphone and prepared to get up to speak, but listening to the pleas of the Sai Students, He remained seated and spoke for an hour.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

January 01 , 2008

Man expects the New Year to confer on him and the world at large peace, happiness and prosperity. But the welfare of the world depends on man's conduct and behaviour. Man's conduct depends on his mind. The nature of the mind depends on thoughts. Only when man's thoughts are based on truth will the world flourish. One who aspires for the welfare of the world should see to it that his thoughts and actions are in accordance with his aspirations. The New Year brings with it neither happiness nor misery. Man attains happiness or misery based on the actions he performs. So, he should perform righteous deeds.

On this New Year Day, you should resolve that you will start every day with Love, spend the day with Love, fill the day with Love and end the day with Love. There should be no difference of caste, creed, color, religion or nationality. Love knows no distinction of any kind. You must wish every one to be happy. Fill the heart with Love. Cultivate good thoughts, speak good words and do good deeds with the broad view that everyone in the world should be happy.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

January 02 , 2008

People should know that there is nothing closer to them than the Divine. Each one must strive to recognise this indwelling Divinity. Most people waste their time in observance of external rituals and forms of worship. Along with external observances, people should try to achieve internal purity. The human being is a composite of man, beast and God, and in the inevitable struggle among the three for dominance, you must ensure that God wins.
