By the Divine Grace of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

You should not be ever entangled in the meshes of this world and its problems. Try to escape into the purer air of the spirit as often as you can, taking the name of the Lord on your tongue. Of the 24 hours of the day, have 6 hours for your individual needs, 6 hours for the service of the others, 6 hours for sleep and 6 hours for dwelling in the Presence of the Lord. Those six hours will endow you with the strength of steel.
Divine Discourse, May 23 2002.

The greater the number of desires, the lesser the happiness you will experience. Be contented. A discontented man loses everything; only a contented man can experience real joy. The happiness in one's life will be in inverse proportion to one's desires. In the journey of life, as in a railway journey, the lesser the luggage (desires) one carries, the greater the comfort.

Devotion to one's motherland is as important as devotion to God. When integrity and patriotism are developed in an individual, his vision becomes broad and his outlook balanced. The motherland is not just a place on the map or an extent of land or a collection of names; it is verily the Mother who feeds the body as well as the mind. It teaches the art of progressing towards the supreme goal of life, namely, self-realization. It is thus the embodiment of both Lakshmi (Goddess of prosperity) and Saraswathi (Goddess of knowledge).

Develop largeness of heart. The heart is not a physical organ. It derives its name "Hridaya" from the fact that it is a seat of daya (Compassion). Develop compassion for all. Go forward from the narrow feelings of "I" and "mine" to "We" and "Ours". It is not easy to comprehend the formless, attributeless, infinite Divine. The truth of the Divine has to be discovered and experienced by each and everyone. The Divine is omnipresent... You must lead a life of truth and Godliness based on this conviction. Strive to make the nation an upholder of truth and righteousness. This is the foremost duty today.
- Divine Discourse, June 22, 1987
August 14, 2008
The blazing fire of Jnana (wisdom) which convinces you that all this is Brahman (God), will consume in to ashes all traces of your egoism and worldly attachment. You must become intoxicated with the nectar of union with Brahman. That is the ultimate goal of Dharma (righteousness) and Karma (action).

The heart is referred to as "Hrudaya" (Hrud + daya), meaning that the heart is the seat of compassion. Real education is that, which fosters virtues, morality, truth, compassion, discipline and duty. It is not enough to be merely intelligent. Education must confer wisdom that flows from the heart and not just knack or cunningness... Set apart some time for service. Be balanced. You should neither study continously nor play all the time. Do not slide into lazy habits; laziness must be avoided at all costs. Excessive talking must also be avoided. Too much talk diminishes memory and dulls intelligence. Therefore, talk only when you must, and speak sweetly. When you talk, be always courteous and never fail to respect your parents. Your actions must always be based on love f or you to be called as an educated person.

A devotee, filled with the love of the Lord, welcomes what may appear as punishing as something intended for his good. Even when the Lord appears to be angry, His compassion is evident. Even in punishment God's kindness will be seen. Hence no one should cherish grievance that he or she has been singled out for punishment. Even punishment is a means of leading one to God. The display of anger is for safeguarding the devotee. The true devotee is one who recognises this truth and welcomes whatever happens to him as intended for his good.

Who is a human? One endowed with a "mind" is a human being. A person without the thinking faculty can never feel kind or compassionate. They alone are true human beings, who instinctively assist those who are in distress and seeking help. One must be eager to wipe the tears of others. You must always endeavor to help and give relief to those who are suffering.
- Divine Discourse, May 15, 2000.
August 12, 2008
Whatever the crisis, however deep the misery, do not allow your grip over the mind to get loose. Tighten it further, fixing your eyes on the higher values. Do not allow the mind to stray away from the tabernacle of the heart. Make it bow before the Atma within.

Truth, Sacrifice and Righteousness constitutes humanness. Truth is Neethi (Morality), Righteousness is Reethi (Code of Conduct), and Sacrifice is Khyathi (Reputation). The combination of all of these is called Manava Jathi (Human Race). One cannot be called a human being on the basis of the form. One has to adhere to truth, uphold righteousness, and develop the spirit of sacrifice to deserve the title of human being. Spend time in serving others. Love your fellowmen. Surrender yourself to God. The entire world is permeated with Love and nothing surpasses Divine Love.

Impure gold is melted in the crucible and it emerges shining and bright. The mind rendered impure by Rajas (passion) and Tamas (sloth), by anger and conceit, by the impressions of a thousand attachments and desires, can be made bright and resplendent if it is put in to the crucible of Vicahara (enquiry) and heated on the coals of Viveka (discrimination). The brightness is due to the light of Realization, the knowledge that you are the Atma.

When you repeat the Name without feeling, it seldom reaches the mark. The Name of the Lord must be recited with awe and wonder, humility and reverence. The bow has to be drawn full before the arrow is released; then it will pierce the target. Feeling is the force that draws the strings taut and makes the Name reach the deity, the bearer of the Name.

Before you do anything, pause, take time, think and reflect on what you are about to do. Never be in a hurry. Remember, "Haste makes Waste." Avoid impulsive actions. Instead, pause and ponder. Whenever a thought arises in you to do something, take time and ask yourself: "Is it good or bad?" It is very important to exercise your discrimination properly. It is "Fundamental Discrimination" that you should apply and not individual discrimination. Fundamental Discrimination means "Your action should benefit others." Avoid haste, be patient, decide carefully using fundamental discrimination and only then act.

Many feel that it is human to err and that Bhagawan should forgive their lapses. In fact, if they were truly human, they should not commit mistakes at all. Even if sometimes a mistake is committed, willingly or unwillingly, it should not be repeated. It is a grievous error to think that it is natural for a human being to err. To follow the directives of the senses is the mark of an animal. To be guided by the Atma is the sign of a human being. None should attempt to justify his or her weaknesses and lapses as natural to a human being. They should be regarded as signs of mental debility. When you have truly acquired sense-control, you will experience the power of the Divine in you.

Today it is a common practice for people to deposit their money in banks. Likewise, deposit the power of your senses, your mind and the wisdom in the bank of God. They will never diminish; they will continue to grow forever and will be returned to you in times of need. Sustain and safeguard sacred love. Never give vent to hatred. Consider whatever happens as good for you.
- Divine Discourse, July 28, 1999.

The body is the temple, and God is the Indweller. If this body is a temple, so is that body and every other body. All bodies are temples. The same God resides in every one of them. The same God is present in all. Hence, regard the entire universe as one big family. Love all without exception. If you hate anyone, it amounts to hating your own self. So hurt never and help ever. There is no God beyond Love. God is Love and Love is God. Live in Love.

Man seeks joy in far places and peace in quiet spots; but, the spring of joy is in his heart, the heaven of peace is in him. Even when he walks on the moon, man has to take with him his fears, his anxieties, his prejudices and his pet aversions. Have faith in God, and in the correctness of moral living. Then, you can have peace and joy, whatever may be the fare that fortune offers
you.

Discrimination is very essential in life. One must always inquire, “Is it good or bad?” and “Is it right or wrong?” We must accept the good and discard the bad. It is not enough that discrimination be practiced only for physical objects. We must use discrimination in our vision – in what we see. We must show discrimination in our words, in what we listen to, in our thoughts and, of course, in our actions and in our behaviour. Only then will the word ‘discrimination’ acquire significance.

There is one aspect that you can use to identify Divinity. That is by showing your gratitude. God is giving you so many things. When you are not well, a doctor comes and gives you an injection. You then pay the doctor his fees. Your expression of gratitude ends there. When you are hungry, you tell your mother that you would like to eat something. Your mother gives you some food that you relish with great joy. This itself is an expression of gratitude to your mother. You may be suffering - when someone consoles you and gives you strength, you express your gratitude to him. In this way, all the help rendered should be gratefully acknowledged without fail. Make this be your way of life.
